Matt has worked at Winchester Caravans and Motorhomes for four years, first joining the team as a Service Technician and working his way up to the role of Workshop Manager.

In his spare time, Matt likes to go to the gym and play football in a local Saturday league with a couple of the other workshop staff. He also enjoys spending time with friends and family and taking his dog Gala on adventures!

Matt Boast, Workshop Manager - Winchester Caravans and MotorhomesWhat does your role involve?

I manage a team of eight staff - five fitters and three cleaners, so a lot of my time goes into their task management and ensuring they have the knowledge they need to do their jobs well. I provide quite a lot of on-the-job training to the fitters so that they’re confident in carrying out any new tasks that they’re presented with. I work closely with Trevor Egerton and James Mainwaring to ensure that all service, warranty and sales caravans are worked on and maintained to a high standard before the customer collects their caravan or motorhome.

We carry out PDIs - pre delivery inspections - on all caravans and motorhomes that we sell to ensure that everything is in full working order for when the customer collects. After the PDIs, our cleaners will give the vehicle a thorough clean inside and out. I work with the cleaners to demonstrate the high standards that must be met in order to ensure our customers are impressed with the end results.

I also get hands-on myself during busy times, carrying out service, fitment of accessories and repair work when needed, which I really enjoy too.

What’s your career background?

It’s quite varied! I did a two-year plumbing course after school, but unfortunately the recession hit after that and I was unable to complete my gas training, so I decided to do an Agricultural Engineering Apprenticeship instead. That took four years and after that I took some time out to go travelling around various countries.

When I returned I worked with my dad for a while doing painting and decorating and then I saw the Service Technician role advertised and decided to go for it! A year into the role I had my appraisal and made it clear that I was committed to the company and would love to progress. So when the Workshop Manager at the time decided to move on, I was promoted to Workshop Team Leader and given the opportunity to undertake some management training. Soon after I stepped up to the Workshop Manager position. It’s been a great learning curve and I’m really enjoying the job and all the challenges it brings.

What are the most rewarding and challenging elements of the role?

It’s great to get feedback from customers when they’re really pleased with their caravan or when we’ve sorted a problem for them. I also find it rewarding to train my staff - helping the fitters to learn and expand their skill set really gives me job satisfaction.

The most challenging part is when we get jobs that present us with problems or faults that we haven’t had to deal with before, but myself and Trevor Egerton work closely  together to find the best solution and we always ensure the job gets done and done well, so that can also be very rewarding.

What’s your proudest work achievement?

Progressing from Service Technician to Workshop Manager in such a short space of time. I worked hard and showed people that I was dedicated and capable and it paid off.

What are your goals going forward?

To keep learning! There are always new vehicles coming to the market and always new things to learn. I’m keen to undertake further training to develop my skills and enable me to do the best job I possibly can. At Winchester Caravans and Motorhomes we are experts in our field and I want to ensure that continues.

Why is Winchester Caravans and Motorhomes a great place to work?

It’s nice that it’s a family-run business, not a big corporate company and they make you feel like a valued member of a close-knit team. Everyone is really friendly and easy to get on with which makes coming into work a pleasure.
