Handy hints for half-term harmony

It’s officially the half-term holidays and that means only one thing – keeping kids company. To make sure your family photo albums are full of smiles, factor in the ‘3 P’s’ (pick, pack and plan) before you book your next half-term holiday in your caravan.

It’s officially the half-term holidays and that means only one thing – keeping kids company.

Particularly in the colder months, the words camping and children uttered together are enough to cause a shudder, but if done right caravanning can be an inexpensive and memorable family holiday.

With a bit of planning, the image of bored, cold and generally miserable children (and adults) can be transformed into energetic youngsters running wild in the great outdoors or kept entertained within a caravan’s four walls.

To make sure your family photo-albums are full of smiles, factor in the ‘3 P’s’ before you book your next half-term holiday in your caravan:

Pick your park

Coastal, rural or within easy reach of a shopping centre – there’s a suitable site for everyone (have you checked out https://www.pitchup.com/?)

Think about the kind of site you’d like to be on, and show your unselfish side by factoring in those who are travelling with you.

You might also want to factor in how often the whole family holiday together – are you experts in navigating a 4-berth caravan alongside 3 other humans or is it safer (and far less frustrating) to be near family-friendly amenities that you can spend most of your time.

Pack for all eventualities

We know that caravanning is all about living the simple life, but that definitely doesn’t mean ‘slumming it’ in the outback.

Particularly in the winter months, being cold guaranteed to ruin anyone’s mood. Think about spare layers, blankets and a decent sleeping bag in case of sudden changes in temperature or accidental spills.

Other essential supplies include toilet paper, plenty of toiletries and a first aid kit.

Oh – and a great top tip is cooking meals at home that can be re-heated – easy, inexpensive and it means you can spend less time slaving behind a stove and more time bonding with your family.

Plan properly

It pays to pre-plan your trip, from the packing to pitching up, especially when taking children. Then after that, you’ll be able to spontaneously explore, enjoy the fresh air and be outdoors, a special treat in a world where we seem to always abide by pretty fixed timetables (even school kids these days).

Have in mind tourist attractions, routes for one or two rambles and events or activities taking place that are ideal for children and adults alike – with Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas around the corner, you’ll be spoilt for choice!
