England. Our homeland. We’re extremely lucky to be able to call such a place home. Although the weather may not always be kind to us, especially with its tendency to be changeable, we do have many things to be thankful for...

England is a beautiful country with its pretty beaches, rolling countryside and sites of historical interest. It’s made up of 56 cities and a staggering 48,983 towns! So there are endless places to visit and explore and what better way to do it than in a caravan? There’s a perfect holiday destination for everyone, something to suit every interest and taste. Staycations are on the rise!

Explore England in style! - Winchester CaravansHome from home

Exploring England in your very own caravan is the dream. It enables you to surround yourself with all your favourite things without the hassle of having to pack half the house every time! You know that wherever the day takes you, you’ll be returning to your own private haven - your home from home. All you need to do is find a suitable pitch for your caravan and you can go off on whatever adventures your heart desires!

Waking up or coming back to your fully equipped home on wheels will mean you won’t have to compromise on anything. Your onboard kitchen and bathroom facilities will provide you with all your creature comforts - so you can enjoy a home-cooked meal after stepping out of a refreshing shower. And there’s none of this trekking to the toilet block in the middle of the night either!

Road trip or single destination?

The beauty of caravanning is the freedom it gives you. It is what you make it and that can be whatever you want it to be! Would you like to explore the country one destination at a time? Do you have a list of must-see destinations that you’re looking forward to ticking off one long weekend at a time? Or perhaps a few of the destinations will be enjoyed over a longer period if it’s a place of particular interest. There are no rules!

You could decide to plan a bit of a road trip. Take a couple of weeks off work and tour a couple of counties or even the whole country if you’re after a whistle-stop tour or have longer than the standard two weeks. Plan your route carefully so you’re not having to travel any more than is necessary. Have a think about what you want to do in each location as this will give you an idea of how long you might spend in each place. Make sure you also plan in some chill time too!

Do it your way

When planning any caravanning trip, you really don’t need to be tied to anything - you can do it your own way, in your own time. Caravanning is very versatile! So you could choose to see where the wind takes you and once you’re there, find a place to pitch. Or if you prefer to have your plans a little more set than that, you can book caravan sites ahead of time when planning your trip.

Use a caravan site finder to find suitable sites. Even if you’re not looking to book prior to embarking on your trip, it could prove invaluable to have a list of caravan sites to hand for the areas you’re heading for. Check that they’re open at the time of year you’re visiting and whether they have availability. Remember that although a hardstand caravan pitch with electrical hook-up may be preferable, any camping site with space could be an option, especially if you have a leisure battery so you’re not reliant on hooking up.

Quick getaways

If you’ve decided to opt for a bit of a road trip and plan to visit a number of different destinations, consider what you can do to make each move hassle-free. Travel light - don’t lug around loads of extras that will make packing and unpacking the car/caravan at each stop laborious.

If you’re thinking of purchasing an awning for the trip, do your research and go for one that is quick and easy to erect. Winchester Caravans stock a range of awnings and our accessory shop sales team are very knowledgeable and can answer any questions you have, so do pop in and take a look!

Great places to visit

South Downs

A range of chalk hills covering an area of about 260 square miles, the South Downs encompass many picturesque towns and villages throughout Hampshire and East and West Sussex. Must-see places include Arundel with its stunning castle and The South Downs Way, providing 100 miles of walks, cycle routes and even horse riding.

New Forest

Set in Hampshire on the south coast, the New Forest has much to offer. From outdoor pursuits to leisurely lunches, lush forest treks to calm coastal walks. Beaulieu, Brockenhurst, Lymington, Lyndhurst and Milford-on-Sea are just a few of the places you should earmark to visit.

West Country

This encompasses the most south western counties of England including Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. They offer stunning beaches and masses of countryside including Exmoor, Dartmoor and the Quantoc Hills. Be sure to enjoy a cream tea while you’re here too - but the big question is: jam or cream first?

Cotswolds

Packed full of quintessentially English market towns and villages built from honey-coloured stone, the Cotswolds are the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England. Bourton on the Water, Bath, Castle Combe and Gloucester all have plenty to offer visitors, whether you’re looking for unique shopping experiences, beautiful scenery or a bit of culture.

Yorkshire Dales

Located in the north of England, the Dales comprise moors, valleys, hills and villages. Containing both a National Park and an Area of Outstanding National Beauty, the Dales are idea for walking, cycling and caving.

Lake District

A National Park in Cumbria in the north west, the Lake District is known for its glacial ribbon lakes. As well as enjoying the stunning scenery, market towns Kendal, Ambleside and Keswick are also worth a look.
