    caravan sizes

When buying a new caravan there are many things to think about - your budget, which manufacturer to go for, what your must-have features are - but it’s important to also consider the size of caravan you’ll need as there are many variables on offer.

Not only will you need to decide how much space you’ll need for your family, but also how that space is distributed and laid out. Caravan layout can make all the difference; if it’s not the right set up for you and your party, it can make caravan life very difficult indeed!

Being aware of how our actions and activities affect the environment has never been more important; we know that we must halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by no later than 2050 to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

Opting for a caravanning break in England rather than going abroad is the first step to doing your bit. Aviation CO2 emissions are estimated to be 1/4 tonne per hour of flying, so reducing the amount of air or ferry travel will undoubtedly contribute to the lowering of carbon dioxide emissions and other pollution, all of which will have a positive effect on the planet.

    Motorhome

If you’re researching your motorhome options at the moment, be sure to consider storage before making your final decision. As space is limited inside motorhomes, how the storage works for you will become very prominent once you’re on the road!

Different manufacturers and models mean variations on the amount and type of storage on offer, so investigate fully before committing to buy. There would be nothing worse than purchasing your new motorhome only to find there isn’t room for all your belongings, or even that the storage positioning doesn’t work for you.

  • Discover the 8ft-wide caravan options…

    Bailey Alicanto

If having a bit of extra space is important to your caravanning experience, then why not consider going for one of the 8ft-wide caravans on the market? A standard caravan width is approximately 7ft 4” wide, so you’ll be getting an extra 8” of internal space which could make all the difference.

Wider caravans are often popular with families or those caravanning in a larger group than a couple. Those extra inches give the caravan a much more spacious feel and the extra floor space makes moving around the van much easier. It also means better storage too as there is more space for cupboards and wardrobes, which is always a winner!

  • 7 great places to caravan in Cornwall

    Cornwall

Cornwall, at the south west tip of England, is a great county to visit! It is famed for many things, from its cream teas and Cornish pasties, to great beaches and surfing communities. Its location on the south coast means it enjoys much milder climes and more sunshine than counties further north.

Food is a big thing in Cornwall. Pasties were adopted by miners and farm workers in the 17th century as a filling and easy meal whilst on the go. The traditional filling is minced beef, potato, onion and swede and even today, visitors to the county are often keen to try one. Cream tea is another traditional Cornish treat. The Cornish way to eat a scone is to spread the jam then add a spoonful of clotted cream on top. Neighbouring Devon prefers to spread the cream and dollop the jam. Each to their own, but why not give both a try and decide for yourself?

There’s plenty you can do to keep active and entertained wherever you choose to stay - not that chilling out inside your caravan isn’t a very viable option too of course! But having some activities or days out planned will help give your holiday some shape and make you feel like you’ve done something and seen a bit of the area.

The pandemic has had a huge effect on all types of manufacturing and caravans are no exception. Production numbers last year were greatly reduced meaning that there were fewer new caravans available to buy. Manufacturers have announced that the 2022 ranges, due to launch in September, will be much the same so if you’re keen to buy a new caravan this year, you’ll need to be quick off the mark. So why not do your research and decision-making now so you’re ready to buy when September arrives?

With beautiful sandy beaches, picturesque rural villages and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), what more could you ask for?

Historians discovered hard evidence that the cream tea started at Tavistock’s Benedictine Abbey over 1,000 years ago, when monks fed workers a combination of bread, clotted cream and strawberry jam. Today we have graduated to scones with our yummy toppings and a pot of tea to accompany it, but the big question is - jam or cream first? The traditional Devonshire way is cream on the bottom, jam on top!

The past year has been a difficult one, with most families finding themselves unable to enjoy their annual summer holiday abroad due to the pandemic. This has however, resulted in a rise in those opting for caravan or motorhome holidays instead; a great option as with washroom and kitchen facilities on board, you can remain completely self-contained, limiting contact with others as much as you want to.

Full awnings are practically the length of your caravan and therefore offer the most space, porch awnings offer sheltered space outside the caravan, ideal for drying off and storing boots etc, and canopies offer a retractable roof which could provide shelter from the rain or sun if required.

    Tom Adams

Tom joined Winchester Caravans & Motorhomes in 2016 and has worked his way up from trainee technician during that time. Outside of work, Tom enjoys running, playing football and going to music festivals and on sunny holidays when there isn’t an ongoing pandemic!

The pandemic also scuppered Tom’s plans to run the 2020 London Marathon. He and his brother were signed up to run in memory of their grandad, who tragically died whilst taking part in the marathon in 1990, four years before Tom was born. Family members ran in his memory in 2000 and 2010 and the brothers were due to take the baton this year. They will now complete this in 2022 when the marathon returns to its normal April schedule.

    Motorhome

You’ve got a readymade holiday home waiting to take you anywhere you wish. If you’re retired or have time off, getting away in the caravan could give you the break you need after the year we’ve had. As people gear up for Christmas and the kids are in school, it should be relatively quiet at sites, giving you the chance to really relax.

    Utilities

The clocks have gone back, the heating is on and the fluffy slippers are out - yes, winter is well on its way! Although modern caravans are well-equipped for year-round touring, with well-insulated body construction, advanced heating systems and endless creature comforts, the majority of caravanners still opt for spring-autumn trips only.

If this is the case for you, now’s the time to prepare your caravan for the cold winter months on the drive or in storage. There are many things you can do to ensure your caravan remains in tip top condition until the temperature rises a little and the time comes to get back on the road.

Utilities - not the most exciting thing in the world, but when you’re caravanning, they’re essential! They make all your creature comforts possible - drinking water, a hot shower, light, warmth and most importantly, a hot cup of tea!

If you’re looking to buy your first caravan, about to embark on your first trip or considering changing models, you’ll need to investigate the utilities in your caravan to make sure you’re happy with them and that you know how they work.
