Van model levels explained

There are many VW transporter van models on the market, so when choosing your van to convert, be sure to inspect each one that catches your eye fully to see what driving features it has. That said, there are three broad levels of Transporter van - the Startline, Trendline and Highline and the names say it all. The Startline has a 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, electric front windows, electric heated door mirrors and single front passenger seat. Trendline models have various added extras such as parking sensors, bluetooth phone connection, cruise control and body coloured bumpers. Highline also offers an upgraded alarm system, leather steering wheel and gear knob, upgraded air con system and front fog lights.

Once converted, the campervans have model names of their own, some of the most popular ones being Portofino, Santorini, St Tropez and Monte Carlo. They each offer something different so research them all to see which will suit your needs best.

Campervan quality

When you’re looking at either pre-owned campervans or pre-owned vans to be converted into a campervan, there are a few qualities that your prospective van should have to ensure that you’ll end up with a first-class camper. These are the things that Winchester Caravans and Motorhomes always insist on when choosing their stock:

• Vans should be low mileage and between 1 and 5 years old

• Vans should have full service history

• If older than three years old, check that nothing untoward was raised on the MOT

• Check what they’ve been used for - this could give some clues to how well it’s been looked after

• Does the van have a ‘looked after feel’? 

• If already converted, the interior should be in excellent condition

• Exterior should not have any dents or noticeable wear and tear

• If converted, the conversion should have been done a reputable converter - check the paperwork
