Winchester Caravans and Motorhomes have been official dealers of VW campervans for over a year now! Over that time demand has been high; in a year when more people than ever have opted for holidays in leisure vehicles due to the pandemic.

Opting for a VW campervan can offer many benefits, especially at a time when travel abroad is not possible or safe. A campervan will give you a holiday home on wheels, ready to go when the opportunity arises! It provides you with all your creature comforts (unlike camping!) and is less of a commitment than some other leisure vehicles.

VW Camper

VW campervans can be bought new or pre-owned; converted or ready to convert - the choice is yours! Before you make your final decision, why not take a look at our top 10 reasons to buy a VW campervan and see if you’ve considered all the important things?

CURB APPEAL

Let’s be completely honest - they’re cool! Who wouldn’t want to be part of the VW camper club?! Not many of us can resist a peek when a shiny VW camper cruises past! Their image promises fun, spontaneous adventures and that’s what you’ll get if you decide to go for one!

VW QUALITY

VW is known for its superior quality. The transporter vans are reliable and have well galvanised bodies, making them ideal for conversion. Conversions carried out by a reputable company will mean that the high quality will continue through to the finish as well. There are many different options available so be sure to specify what you’re after if buying pre-conversation, or shop around for what you want if opting for one that’s already converted.

FREEDOM!

Having a VW campervan will give you the freedom to go where you like, when you like! No need to worry about researching and booking accommodation, you can just take off! And because campervans are compact, you can get away with parking up wherever takes your fancy (in line with parking rules of course!) and just enjoy what’s around you. The only thing to consider is that you’ll need access to toilets and washing facilities - though you could invest in a porta potti, and even a ‘wash tent’ for the summer months to house a camping loo and shower.

EASY GETAWAYS

The great thing about campervans over camping or caravanning is that they are the easy option! They have facilities onboard, such as the kitchenette and storage space, so you’ll have less to pack and will be able to get away quicker and with less planning. This will enable you to have more breaks away, with less hassle! There’s also the added benefit of when you’re away, it’s easy to move around - there’s no towing as you’re in a van and no ‘pitching’ and levelling up to do, so you really can location-hop as you please!

PRACTICAL SIZE

They’re compact - much smaller than motorhomes - so they’re easier to drive and park when out and about, which will give you peace of mind when you’re on a trip and don’t always know where you’re going! They’re also easy to store as it will fit in a double garage or on a small driveway, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding space for it.

MULTI-USE

Due to their compact design, VW campervans can double up as an everyday vehicle if you wish, meaning you’ll potentially get more use out of it. They can be easily parked in standard parking spaces in public car parks, so no need to worry about whether it’ll fit!

HIGHLY VERSATILE

They’re flexible - some models come with five seats for travelling (great for families) and can comfortably sleep a family of five or four adults. They have a fully equipped kitchenette, enabling you to take all your meals on-board if you wish. The fridge means you’ll have cold drinks to hand around the clock and the ability to make a cuppa whenever you fancy one!

GREAT PRE-CONVERTED CHOICE

There are plenty of models and options to choose from with VW campervans. If buying pre-converted, the Transporter van choices are Startline, Trendline and Highline and the names say it all. The Startline has a 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, electric front windows, electric heated door mirrors and single front passenger seat. Trendline models have various added extras such as parking sensors, bluetooth phone connection, cruise control and body coloured bumpers. Highline also offers an upgraded alarm system, leather steering wheel and gear knob, upgraded air con system and front fog lights.

FAB POST-CONVERTED CHOICE

Once converted, the campervans have model names of their own, some of the most popular ones being Portofino, Santorini, St Tropez, Monte Carlo and Le Mans. They each offer something different so research them all to see which will suit your needs best and to ensure you get all the things on your wishlist.

GOOD INVESTMENT

VW campervans hold their value really well so it’ll be money well-spent! They’re always in high demand so if you’ve gone for a good quality conversion you’ll have no trouble selling it on when the time comes to upgrade.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A CAMPERVAN:

  • It is a motor vehicle so it will need to be MOT’d and looked after in all the same ways that you do your car. Our workshop offers exceptional servicing, repairs and warranty work so get in touch if there's anything you need.
  • As they’re a compact vehicle, inside space is limited, especially when the beds are made up, so pack wisely, especially if travelling with kids! Also think about which larger items, such as BBQs, bikes and sporting equipment you will be able to take. Keep roof and rear racks in mind for external transportation.
  • Plan where you will store your VW campervan at home. You’ll want to ensure it is kept somewhere safe and secure when not in use.
  • Do your research; check out the different models to see which ones suit your needs best. They can differ quite a bit from facilities to pricing, so make sure you get the one that’s right for you.
  • Make a list of your top 5 must-haves and don’t compromise - you may have to bend on some things to stay within your budget, but stick to your guns on the most important things to ensure you’re happy post-purchase.
  • Set a budget and plan how you’re going to finance your campervan - there are lots of options out there.
  • Take some time to research and consider security features and insurance - boring but important!
