What’s new in awnings for 2021?

Awnings are a great way of creating more space whilst on a caravanning holiday. Some can even double your footprint - that’s a lot of extra space to play with! Whether you’d use it to house extra guests, as an additional living space or as a play area for the kids, awnings are invaluable!

There are three main types of awning to choose from - full awning, porch awning or canopy. Full awnings are practically the length of your caravan and therefore offer the most space, porch awnings offer sheltered space outside the caravan, ideal for drying off and storing boots etc, and canopies offer a retractable roof which could provide shelter from the rain or sun if required.

You’ll also need to decide whether to go for an inflatable or poled awning.Poled awnings are usually cheaper than inflatable ones so if cost is a factor, that’s something to consider. If using an electric pump, putting up an inflatable awning should be quicker and simpler and they fare better in windy weather too. However, inflatable awnings can suffer from condensation, which is inconvenient, but won’t cause any harm.

The events of 2020 affected the production of leisure vehicles as well as many related accessories, awnings included. This was due to manufacturing being paused for several months last year and once restarted, production lines have had to operate with fewer staff for social distancing reasons, which has meant lower output. Whilst we are still awaiting delivery of the new 2021 selection, we are excited to have confirmation of some fantastic new updates to shout about!

Kampa have created a new sizing system for 2021 - their awnings are now available in sizes S, M and L. S (small) is the size that is suitable for touring caravans, (M and L are for larger motorhomes and static caravans) fitting those with heights between 235cm and 265cm. The new design will allow you to unzip the side panel which can increase the height of the awning by 30cm, making it more suitable for both caravans as well as a selection of motorhomes too.

The other change this year is to the branding. Fellow brand Dometic has bought out part of Kampa, so the new Kampa awnings will now have Dometic branding. Rest assured that the awnings are still made in the same way, with the same material as nothing has changed on the production front.

At Winchester Caravans and Motorhomes, we stock both the inflatable and poled ranges.

Isabella have released the Air Cirrus North awning in a 3m size, so it is now available in a choice of 3m or 4m lengths, giving you options, especially if you have a caravan that’s on the smaller side.

Isabella awnings come in canopy, porch and full form.

Ventura awnings are the perfect solution if you require a reasonably priced awning, built to a very high standard with all the attention to detail you would expect from a leading supplier. We stock a range of different Ventura awnings and can also source others that we may not currently have in stock - drop us an email for more details.

Bailey is proud to offer their Prima awning range. Following some design improvements such as using a more weather-resistant material, the Prima Infinity is ideal for caravanners who want a complete inflatable awning experience with included groundsheet and rear back poles as standard.

Dorema combines European quality with affordability, bringing you the ultimate peace of mind. We usually stock a range or Dorema porch and full awnings, but stock is limited at the moment, so please email us to discuss your options further and we’ll do all we can to help.

We offer quality, pre-owned awnings at reasonable prices - giving you the best of both worlds. Check out our current stock.

If you go for a full awning, it could almost double the space you have to play with. Awnings provide a great place for more spacious dining when you’re unable to eat outside and also a great area for the kids to play. Porch awnings also provide extra space and they come in different depths and widths to suit your needs.

Awnings provide great shelter from the rain, so on wet days an awning will be a Godsend! They also provide valuable shade in hotter weather and they can be easily ventilated to provide a cool place to relax.

Awnings are fantastic for just sitting in and enjoying the surrounding area. It may be wet or too chilly to sit outside, but with an awning you can sit and relax and look out; particularly lovely when pitched in a rural or forest-based site.

Awnings provide a great place to store things that you don’t want or cannot fit into the caravan. Things such as outdoor furniture, the BBQ, bikes and wellies are easily stored and close to hand when needed.

Modern awnings don’t take long to put up and with the advancement in designs and materials, they look great too!

Isabella and Dometic awnings can be ordered on our website for home delivery (this will incur a delivery charge) or you can choose the click & collect option and pick up from our premises in Colden Common, Winchester.

For other brands, please drop us an email and we’ll get in touch to place the order on your behalf. Your awning will then be delivered to our premises for you to collect and we’ll notify you when it’s here.

Due to the pandemic, awning production has been extremely limited this year, so if you are considering purchasing an awning, we’d recommend doing so sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment. If the awning you are interested in is showing as out of stock on our website, simply get in touch and we can look into whether we’re expecting more stock soon or if we can pre-order one for you.

Remember that we will be reopening our doors on 12 April, so you’ll soon be able to pop in for a closer look and ask any questions you have!

Our knowledgeable and friendly accessory shop team know all there is to know about awnings and can advise you on the best option for you and your caravan. Browse the ranges we offer online and drop us an email if you have any questions or fancy a chat to explore the possibilities!
