Lucy joined the accessory shop team two years ago and has enjoyed building up her knowledge on everything caravan since then! Outside of work, Lucy loves anything animal-related from walking her Sprocker Spaniel to visiting zoos.

She also enjoys socialising with friends and a spot of gardening when she gets the chance.

Lucy Morgan

What does your role involve?

My role is completely customer-orientated, which is great as I love talking to people! The accessory shop is the hub of Winchester Caravans, people arrive on-site and come into the shop to ask for whoever they are after, so we welcome them in and are the first friendly face they see! A lot of my time is spent meeting and greeting people and helping them to find what they need.

If any bookings need to be made, I make them and I always strive to ensure that communication between the different departments - sales, shop and aftersales - flows well so that nothing gets overlooked. I also help make the shop look nice, ensuring things are laid out well and that stock is ordered regularly so that there is plenty to choose from. I also advise people on purchases and help them find the accessories they need to complement their caravan or motorhome in the best way.

What is your career background?

I went to university and completed a degree in animal management followed by a Masters in zoo biology. After graduating I did placements at Marwell Zoo and the Cotswolds Wildlife Park, but as there weren’t many job opportunities in the animal management area, I decided to refocus on retail. I’ve worked in retail part time since I was 15 and I’ve always enjoyed it. I previously held a job as a supervisor for the Co-op so when I saw this role advertised, I was keen to apply. I’ve really fallen on my feet here as it's a great place to be and the team is so friendly and supportive.

What do you like about caravanning?

I’ve been camping in the past and the freedom it gives you is great! I love that caravanning is very family-orientated and that it gives people the chance to spend lots of quality time together. It’s so nice when customers come back into the shop after their trips to tell me what a great time they’ve had whilst away. It’s especially good that people have been able to get away in the UK despite the pandemic. People that may usually have gone abroad have instead turned to caravanning which has enabled them to enjoy a fantastic holiday when they really needed one.

What do you find most rewarding about your role?

I really enjoy seeing the regulars; they come into the shop and ask for me and sometimes compliment me on how helpful I’ve been, which is really rewarding. It’s also much nicer to work in a family-run business like this one, rather than in a larger commercialised shop - everyone helps each other out when help is needed and there’s always support available if you need it.

Is there anything you find challenging?

It’s taken me a while to learn everything about awnings and all the accessories; I’m keen to constantly grow my knowledge so that I can best serve and advise our customers. The parts side of the business is extensive so keeping up with everything we sell can be challenging! But if I’m ever unsure of anything I ask my colleague Steve, who we also call the thesaurus of Winchester Caravans!

What achievements are you particularly proud of?

I’m proud of how quickly I’ve learnt anything; we’ve got a couple of new members of staff starting which has enabled me to see how far I’ve come! I’ve been invited to the show at the NEC in October to help out with sales and I’m pleased that the team feel I know enough to be there and that makes me feel really valued.

Do you have any aims or plans for the coming year?

I will be moving to the after sales department soon so I’d like to continue to expand my knowledge in that area so that I can help people to the best of my ability and provide excellent customer service. In the future, I’d love to progress here, perhaps taking on a supervisory role at some point.

Why is Winchester Caravans & Motorhomes a great place to work?

It’s a busy but rewarding environment to work in, you always know that you'll be supported in whatever you’re doing and it’s nice to feel appreciated at the end of every day. You go home feeling like you’ve accomplished something! We all pull together to help each other and the team is welcoming to anyone who joins so the atmosphere is always great.
