Are caravans the new cool?
blog / advice / new caravans / accessories / holiday / family
In general, a high percentage of the usual caravanning clientele are older couples who may opt to caravan alone or alongside fellow caravanners. They may be retired with more time on their hands to get a good amount of use from their caravan on a regular basis.
But is the core clientele expanding? With holidays abroad off the cards this year for the first time ever, dealerships have seen more interest from families and younger couples as well…
Modern caravans are cool - how they look and what they can offer you has changed so much over the years. If you imagine a caravan interior from the 80s or 90s, that’s a world away from what they’re like now. They’ve moved with the times! Today’s caravans have sleek interiors, mod cons such as sound systems and WiFi, heating and cooling systems, modern kitchens and fantastic washrooms. It means that you really don’t have to compromise on all your creature comforts!
In addition to that, there is so much choice! No matter what your budget is, you’ll be sure to find something to your liking. You can spend a little more and opt for a new caravan, or keep to a lower budget by going for a pre-owned model. Sizes vary hugely too; you can go for a large 6-berth option to cater for the whole family, or opt for a compact van such as the Swift Basecamp - the ideal option for a couple on the go! Then there is everything in between to consider too...
At Winchester Caravans and Motorhomes, we stock a range of different manufacturers on our pre-owned caravan side, from Lunar, Sterling and Coachman to Elddis, Swift and Bailey. On the new side, we are partnered with both Bailey and Swift to bring you the highest quality new caravans on the market.
Spend some time reading reviews of the various manufacturers to start with. This should give you a feel for which would suit your needs and taste best. Different manufacturers favour different dimensions, some offering larger washrooms for example, while others opt for more compact washrooms to utilise that extra space in the living areas. This is just one of the things to consider and it’s personal preference as to where you will value the extra space most.
Which model is right for you?
There are so many different models available that it will be hard to choose! The best way to navigate your way to the right model is to ask yourself the following questions and look for a caravan that meets those needs:
1. What berth do you need?
2. What layout are you after - middle or rear bathroom?
3. What bed configuration do you need?
4. What facilities are top of your wish list?
5. What heating system would you prefer?
6. How much storage do you need?
Why should families and younger couples opt to caravan in 2020 and beyond?
Invest in a caravan in 2020 and you’ll be reaping the rewards for years to come. Although there is an initial outlay obviously, you can use it as many times as you like each year. It will provide the means for inexpensive weekends away as well as longer breaks. It’s all self-contained so you know that it’s safe during the COVID-19 pandemic as you’ll only be using your own kitchen and bathroom facilities. It will enable you to explore your homeland in style!

You can stay close to home
In the current climate, it might be a good idea to stay close to home this year in case anything changes with the COVID-19 situation. The beauty of caravanning is that you can choose to venture as far or as near as you choose - you’ll be amazed what’s on your doorstep!
Plenty to keep the kids occupied
You don’t need expensive day trips for the kids to enjoy themselves, which is handy as many tourist attractions may remain closed this year. Kids are happiest exploring the campsite on foot and bikes, going in search of animals and insects, building dens and playing ball games!
Quality family time
Family holidays are precious; it gives each family member the chance to unwind and enjoy each other’s company away from the stresses of everyday life. Take this time to chill out and spend quality time with your loved ones, whether that’s exploring your surroundings or playing board games.
